  • Digester biogas plant powered by Perkins

Overview This Perkins® 4008-30TRS2 Engine has been chosen to convert biogas into electric energy which is fed into the electric grid in accordance with the German renewable energy law. The thermal energy is made available to a local vehicle paint workshop. The Engine, combined with an exhaust gas catalyst is easily capable of achieving the formaldehyde emissions of less than 40 mg / Nm³. Therefore a bonus is paid to the operator. Opportunity Provide 500 kWe baseload through a 4008-30TRS2 Engine to provide dependable and efficient power. Result BU Power Systems, a Perkins Gas Centre of Excellence, worked with the OEM to supply a gas solution that met both the customer's requirements and timeframe. BU Power Systems support The engine has run for approximately 8550 hours per year since the middle of 2011. The operator is carrying out preventive maintenance operations in accordance with the Perkins schedule. BU Power Systems (responsible for corrective operations) and the operator as well are very satisfied with the performance of the engine. Customer feedback "With the installed lambda control system the engine is very robust against gas quality variations. The starting behavior as well as the operation at full load is very good compared to other engine manufacturers and fuel metering systems" says owner Joern Frahm. "Also the maintenance interval schedule and costs are absolutely acceptable and the engine side doors and single cylinder heads make the accessibility of engine components outstanding". • Perkins collaboration lets EPS wash and go

Euro Pool System (EPS) is Europe's largest logistical service provider for returnable and reusable packaging. The company effectively rents out trays and containers to growers, producers and major food retailers for the transport of meat, fruit and vegetables. Once the consignment has been delivered the trays and containers are returned to one of the company's collection points, where they are prepared for re-use. Each collection point is equipped with washing facilities where the trays are sorted and cleaned in readiness for despatch to the next client. Cleanliness of the trays is of the utmost importance the washing process meets the strictest standards with the detergent, water temperature and rinse water being constantly monitored. As the business has grown the number of trays in circulation has increased around 130 million units currently. In a bid to lower the energy costs involved in heating the water and running the automated washing equipment EPS turned to cogeneration (CHP), installing its first CHP unit in 2011 at its site in St. Katelijne Waver, Belgium. Running on natural gas, the CHP unit provides the electricity to power the washers and heats the water to clean the trays 16,000 of them every hour. Perkins Gas Partner, E Van Wingen (EVW), installed and commissioned the cogeneration unit, using a Perkins 4008-30TRS2 to supply 500 kWe. Such was the success of the project that EVW was approached for EPS's latest facility in Bornheim, Germany. Utilising a Perkins 4006-23TRS1, EVW has built and installed a CHP plant capable of producing 310kWe and with a thermal output of 412 kWth. In addition EVW has increased the utility of the plant it also doubles as a standby generator set for the facility. Though Germany is outside of EVW's normal service territory, the project was made feasible by working in conjunction with BU Power Systems, an authorised Perkins 4000 Series Gas Centre of Excellence, who are perfectly positioned to provide ongoing service and maintenance. The decision by EPS to select EVW for this project was built on EVW's enviable reputation and from EPS' past experience with the business dating back more than ten years. EPS is a partner in the REO Auction in Roulers, where in 1999; EVW installed a CHP power unit, which at the time was still a new concept. "E Van Wingen has proven itself to be a reliable partner in realizing cogenerator projects," said Ron Eeuwijk, manager E&D, Euro Pool System International B.V. "The installations are built to a high standard and have a reliable operation. In the very few cases a breakdown occurs response is swift and adequate." [View Details]
  • Perkins biogas generator CHP project case

Waste proves profitable in district CHP installation When district utility Biogas Oberhessen GmbH & Co, a subsidiary of Ovag Energie AG, issued a tender for the construction of a new biogas installation near the town of Wölfersheim, north of Frankfurt, it was Perkins Gas Partner, Belgium-based E Van Wingen (EVW), who successfully landed the contract for the design, manufacturing, commissioning and maintenance of the cogeneration (CHP) unit that was part of the specification. The new biogas plant, which has a capacity of 500Nm3/h methane, was seen as a major step forward for the area in the provision of both biomethane for transmission to the public gas grid and for the production of electricity for the 10,000 strong community of Wölfersheim. EVW chose the Perkins 4006-23TRS2 gas engine as the basis for its CHP installation. Rated at 379kWe, the turbocharged, air-to-water charge cooled, six-cylinder unit can operate on a wide range of methane-based gases, making it the ideal choice to run on the new plant's biogas production which was being derived from a mixture of slurry, silage, sorghum, cereal waste and turkey manure. Since the summer of 2012 the CHP plant has been generating electricity for export into the public grid while the heat is used to help the biogas digestion process and heat the facility's offices. As part of its winning bid EVW enlisted the services of BU Power Systems. As an official Perkins 4000Series Gas Centre of Excellence, BU Power Systems offered the necessary expertise and service that was required as part of the four-year maintenance contract with the local utility company. Commenting on the project, EVW's managing director, Jean-Pierre Van Wingen said: "The Oberhessen installation is significant for a number of reasons. It is the first time that we have tendered and won a contract outside of Belgium for cogeneration and the first time we have worked together with BU Power Systems. The partnership with BU Power Systems will certainly give us scope to increase our business in the German market, where we see district CHP projects growing as part of the general trend to increase CHP's share of the power market." Andrée Baganz, engineering consultant for the Oberhessen plant from Alensys Engineering, Berlin, said:"The Wölfersheim cogen unit has been running for almost a year and even constantly 24/24 hours in the past couple of weeks. At the time of engineering we were in close contact and this has proven useful forimplementation and start-up of the project. "The operator is happy with the CHP unit. This could only be achieved through permanent communication, joint problem solving and seeking to adjust installation parameters to meet the operator's needs." [View Details]
