  • Perkins collaboration lets EPS wash and go

Euro Pool System (EPS) is Europe's largest logistical service provider for returnable and reusable packaging. The company effectively rents out trays and containers to growers, producers and major food retailers for the transport of meat, fruit and vegetables. Once the consignment has been delivered the trays and containers are returned to one of the company's collection points, where they are prepared for re-use. Each collection point is equipped with washing facilities where the trays are sorted and cleaned in readiness for despatch to the next client. Cleanliness of the trays is of the utmost importance the washing process meets the strictest standards with the detergent, water temperature and rinse water being constantly monitored. As the business has grown the number of trays in circulation has increased around 130 million units currently. In a bid to lower the energy costs involved in heating the water and running the automated washing equipment EPS turned to cogeneration (CHP), installing its first CHP unit in 2011 at its site in St. Katelijne Waver, Belgium. Running on natural gas, the CHP unit provides the electricity to power the washers and heats the water to clean the trays 16,000 of them every hour. Perkins Gas Partner, E Van Wingen (EVW), installed and commissioned the cogeneration unit, using a Perkins 4008-30TRS2 to supply 500 kWe. Such was the success of the project that EVW was approached for EPS's latest facility in Bornheim, Germany. Utilising a Perkins 4006-23TRS1, EVW has built and installed a CHP plant capable of producing 310kWe and with a thermal output of 412 kWth. In addition EVW has increased the utility of the plant it also doubles as a standby generator set for the facility. Though Germany is outside of EVW's normal service territory, the project was made feasible by working in conjunction with BU Power Systems, an authorised Perkins 4000 Series Gas Centre of Excellence, who are perfectly positioned to provide ongoing service and maintenance. The decision by EPS to select EVW for this project was built on EVW's enviable reputation and from EPS' past experience with the business dating back more than ten years. EPS is a partner in the REO Auction in Roulers, where in 1999; EVW installed a CHP power unit, which at the time was still a new concept. "E Van Wingen has proven itself to be a reliable partner in realizing cogenerator projects," said Ron Eeuwijk, manager E&D, Euro Pool System International B.V. "The installations are built to a high standard and have a reliable operation. In the very few cases a breakdown occurs response is swift and adequate." [View Details]
  • Digester biogas plant powered by Perkins

Overview This Perkins® 4008-30TRS2 Engine has been chosen to convert biogas into electric energy which is fed into the electric grid in accordance with the German renewable energy law. The thermal energy is made available to a local vehicle paint workshop. The Engine, combined with an exhaust gas catalyst is easily capable of achieving the formaldehyde emissions of less than 40 mg / Nm³. Therefore a bonus is paid to the operator. Opportunity Provide 500 kWe baseload through a 4008-30TRS2 Engine to provide dependable and efficient power. Result BU Power Systems, a Perkins Gas Centre of Excellence, worked with the OEM to supply a gas solution that met both the customer's requirements and timeframe. BU Power Systems support The engine has run for approximately 8550 hours per year since the middle of 2011. The operator is carrying out preventive maintenance operations in accordance with the Perkins schedule. BU Power Systems (responsible for corrective operations) and the operator as well are very satisfied with the performance of the engine. Customer feedback "With the installed lambda control system the engine is very robust against gas quality variations. The starting behavior as well as the operation at full load is very good compared to other engine manufacturers and fuel metering systems" says owner Joern Frahm. "Also the maintenance interval schedule and costs are absolutely acceptable and the engine side doors and single cylinder heads make the accessibility of engine components outstanding". • Tomato grower slices energy costs with Perkins powered CHP unit

Located at Stekene, between Ghent and Antwerp, tomato grower Persoon has 10,500 square metres of greenhouses where the popular vine tomato variety Flandria Princess is cultivated. Selling to Belgium's largest vegetable auction BelOrta, the company is keen to maximise its production while keeping costs in check. However, like many other growers in the region Persoon has had to combat rising energy costs as the price of fuel oil to heat the greenhouses has gone up. Determined to cut operating expenses the business engaged Perkins Gas Partner and cogeneration specialist, E Van Wingen (EVW) to examine the options. Calculations showed that CHP could lower its heating and lighting costs by as much as 30 percent using current gas and electricity prices. The decision taken, EVW installed and commissioned a new CHP unit using a Perkins 4008-30TRS2 gas engine that produces 509 kWe and thermal output of 767 kWth. The resulting installation has not only improved economy and efficiency but has the added bonus of being able to use the carbon dioxide (CO2) from the exhaust gases to be injected into the greenhouses to feed the plants. There have been additional environmental and financial benefits; a saving of 237 tons of CO2 has been achieved and the business now benefits from CHP certificates as well as the revenue from exporting electricity it doesn't need back to the public grid. The heat requirement for Persoon's greenhouses varies with the seasons. In summer the cogeneration is designed to operate only during peak hours to achieve maximum revenue from selling electricity with the heat being stored to be used during the night. In contrast, in winter cogeneration operates around the clock. Overall the system runs for 6,000 hours a year. Jean-Pierre Van Wingen, EVW general manager, stated: "Our CHP customers turn to us because they are interested in the performance of both the Perkins engine and the service team who will take care of long term maintenance. We are surprised at how many of our new customers seem to have been struggling with maintenance contracts in their earlier cogeneration contracts from other brands and suppliers. "They almost cannot believe EVW is still servicing EVW/Perkins cogen units installed 20 years ago and with a satisfactory track record. Long term commitment to end users is indeed key to success in the cogeneration business."Located at Stekene, between Ghent and Antwerp, tomato grower Persoon has 10,500 square metres of greenhouses where the popular vine tomato variety Flandria Princess is cultivated. • Dependable gas power delivers for Azores pig farmer

Overview 2 Perkins® 4000 Series gas engines have been selected to provide power to a 3 acre pig farm in the Azores in addition to supporting the power requirements of the national grid. Opportunity Update the gas engines installed at a pig farm in the Azores. The farm waste generated is put into an Anaerobic Digestion plant, from which the gas engines, currently Perkins 4008 TESI run to supply power back to both the farm and the national grid. Result Due to the reliability and efficiency of the Perkins engines over the years, Mayphil, a Perkins Gas Partner and Gas Centre of Excellence, secured the contract to update the engines to the 4008TRS2, which are reliable and are proven on biogas, natural and landfill gas. The system has worked so well that today, the farmer not only takes and converts the waste from his own pig farm, but also takes in waste from the fisheries, and other bio waste producers around the island, to generate gas for the regional grid. "This project was so successful that the customer achieved payback within 24 months of installation," said Nikki Godfrey, Group Marketing Manager at Mayphil. "The units are still running today and we support the customer in parts and labour." Customer feedback Our Perkins engines run at peak performance daily, and have proven to be very reliable. The spare parts we need to maintain our engines are also of very high quality. Maintenance has proven to be very easy, and as a result contributes to the high availability and quality of electrical power output. We are very pleased with Perkins engines. [View Details]
